Locate the camera or card reader icon in the list of drives on the left side of the window

The location depends on whether you're transferring from the camera or a card reader:

• If you're transferring from the camera, you should see an icon named Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi (or 400D), as in Figure 8-6. When you click the icon, a list of all the files on the camera appears in the right side of the window, as shown in the figure.

• If you're transferring from a card reader, the drive assigned to the reader should display the name EOS Digital, as in Figure 8-7. Click the plus sign next to the icon to display a folder named DCIM. Then click the plus sign next to that folder to display the folder that actually contains your images. (The folder's named 100CANON by default.) Click the 100CANON folder to display your images in the right side of the window.

Figure 8-7: With a memory card reader, open the DCIM folder and its subfolder to access image files.

To view thumbnails of your pictures, as shown in Figures 8-6 and 8-7, choose ViewOThumbnails. Note, though, that Explorer can't display thumbnails for images captured in the Canon Raw format (CR2) until you process them. The section "Processing CR2 (Raw) Files," later in this chapter, explains that bit of business.
