You can adjust the brightness of the LCD monitor to make it easier to read. When checking the exposure of an image, prevent the ambient light from affecting the reviewed image. Also, setting the LCD monitor brightness at the center of the adjustment scale is recommended.
The LCD monitor can be used to check an image during shooting, to play back recorded images or to adjust menu settings. The LCD monitor will automatically turn off when it clicks shut against the camera body. For protection, always close the LCD monitor after use. The LCD monitor can also be positioned as below. Open the LCD monitor left 180 degrees and tilt it 180 degrees toward the lens. In this position, icons and messages do not appear on the LCD monitor. The image shown on the LCD monitor is automatically flipped and reversed so that it appears correctly from in front of the lens. (This reverse display function can be turned off. When the LCD monitor is on, images can be zoomed to approximately 3.8x, 4.9x, 6.1 x, 7.6x, 9.3x or 12x with the combined optical and digital zoom functions. The one way to tell if you have blown out your highlights is to check the Highlight Alert, or blinkies, feature on your camera (see the How I Shoot section in Chapter 4). When you take a shot where the highlights are exposed beyond the point of having any detail, that area will blink in your LCD display. It is up to you to determine if that particular area is important enough to regain detail by altering your exposure. If the answer is yes, then the easiest way to go about it is to use some exposure compensation.
If you really want to ruin your day, try shooting for a couple of hours only to find that you didn't put a memory card in your camera and thus didn't save any of the pictures that you've taken. This was always a concern with film shooters, and it hasn't gone away with digital SLRs. You see, camera manufacturers want to give prospective buyers a way to test out the camera without having to keep a memory card in it, so they came up with a setting called Release Shutter without Card. When your camera is set up in this mode, it will act and shoot just as it would when you have a memory card inserted. It will even display your shot on the rear LCD display. Unfortunately, this is where most photographers get fooled into thinking they are saving their images. If they were to look at the LCD, they would see that Canon was nice enough to overlay a message on the display that clearly says No Card. This is nice, but if you are shooting without looking at the display, you could be easily fooled.
The indicators blink as explained below, and the LCD monitor displays an icon or message to let you know when batteries are low or depleted. Batteries are beginning to run low. Replace or recharge the batteries if you wish to continue using the camera. If the LCD monitor is off, this icon will appear when you press any of the following buttons DISP i or MF.

When you press the shutter button halfway, a number indicating the difference between the standard exposure* and the selected exposure appears on the LCD monitor. Setting the LCD monitor to off (p. 36) and using the optical viewfinder can help conserve power while shooting. Usually the recorded image is wider than the image seen in the viewfinder. Confirm the actual image size with the LCD monitor. The image recorded may differ from the image seen in the viewfinder due to the distance between the viewfinder and lens (especially with close-ups). If you use the viewfinder to take close-up shots, portions of the close-up subject may not appear in the recorded image. For this reason it is better to use the LCD monitor when taking close-up shots.
If Off has been set, either turn off the camera yourself or press the button to turn off the camera settings display to save battery power. If Off has been set and the camera is not used for 30 min., the LCD monitor will turn off automatically. To turn on the LCD monitor again, press the button. The HQ icon and the MF indicator will appear on the LCD monitor. When shooting with the focus lock or AF lock using the LCD monitor, setting AF Frame to Center (p. 24) makes shooting easier since the camera focuses using the center AF frame only.
Use the following procedures to clean the camera body, lens, viewfinder, LCD monitor and other parts. LCD monitor If necessary, gently wipe the viewfinder and LCD monitor with a soft cloth or an eyeglass lens wiper to remove stubborn dirt. Never rub or press forcefully on the LCD monitor. These actions may damage it or lead to other problems.
Use this option to have only the color specified in the LCD monitor remain and to transform all others to black and white. Use this option to transform a color specified in the LCD monitor into another. The specified color can only be swapped into one other color, and multiple colors cannot be chosen.
You can verify image sharpness by pressing the Playback button, and then pressing and holding the AF-Point Selection Enlarge button on the back of the camera. Pressing the AF-Point Selection Enlarge button multiple times progressively zooms from 1.5x to 10x on the LCD monitor. To move around the image to check the point of sharpest focus, tilt and hold the Multi-controller in the direction you want to scroll. To check the sharpness of several images, turn the Quick Control dial to move through images while maintaining the current zoom level.
With setting 2, if a long exposure is made during Live View shooting, the LCD monitor will not display anything (no Live View image display) while noise reduction is applied. During the noise reduction process, shooting is possible. However, you will not be able to see anything on the LCD monitor and in the viewfinder. Since you cannot check the focus and picture composition, shooting is not recommended during the noise reduction process. The EOS-lDs Mark III, EOS-ID Mark III, EOS 40D and EOS Rebel XSi have an exciting Live View Function, where the photographer can compose and shoot directly from the camera's 3.0-inch LCD monitor. Achieved by raising the SLR camera's mirror and perfect for a number of applications, Live View Function enables the photographer to zoom in and navigate the composition 5x or lOx normal size, while enabling critical focus and allowing more attention to detail. Users can even choose a grid overlay, perfect for architectural photography. In the studio, Live View Function can be used remotely via a computer through the camera's USB connection, or wirelessly if the optional Wireless File Transmitter is used.
A My Colors mode easily changes the colors in an image when it is shot, allowing you to alter the balance between red, green and blue, transform pale or tanned skin or change a color specified in the LCD monitor into a different color. Since they work with both stills and movies, these modes let you enjoy producing various image or movie effects. However, depending on the shooting conditions, the images may appear rough or you may not get the expected color. Before you try to photograph important subjects, we highly recommend that you shoot trial images and check the results.
As outlined in the Bulb Exposure description earlier, your Canon EOS 40D can be triggered using a plug-in remote control with an electronic or infrared connection. For example, the Remote Switch RS-80N3 allows triggering a camera attached to the end of its cable. More versatile is the Canon TC-80N3, a remote switch with a 2.6-foot cord (you can add a 33-foot extension cable) and includes a more flexible self-timer that can be set to trip the camera after a delay of anywhere from 1 second to 99 hours, 59 minutes, and 59 seconds (in other words, one second less than 100 hours). It has an LCD display that makes it easy to make and view settings.
Fully electronic, resists abrasion, shock, and rough handling, and doesn't require lubrication as some other lens mounts might. These mounts are strong, as I can attest by admitting to dropping a few cameras in my day, and although the lenses may have exploded, the mounting ring stayed securely fastened to the camera. The EF system does a self-test by using a built-in microcomputer so that you're alerted of possible malfunctions via the camera's LCD display. In addition, if you use lens extenders, exposure compensation is automatically calculated.
LCD Off On Btn By default, the LCD display will turn off when you depress the shutter button, a useful feature if you're bringing the camera up to your eye under low light. The second option, Shutter DISP, will turn the display off until you push the Display button to turn it back on. The final option, Remains On, will maintain the Info screen on the LCD until the camera is turned off or the battery goes dead.
When you first press the shutter release button, your camera quickly processes your shot and then displays the image on the LCD display. The default setting for that display is only two seconds. Personally, I don't find this to be nearly enough time to take in all the visual feedback that I might want. Instead of using this quick glance method, change your display time to the Hold setting. This will keep the image up on the display until you decide that you are ready to move on to your next shot. (Note that this option will drain your batteries a little faster than the default setting.)
Slide the power replay lever to the right and hold its position until an image appears on the LCD monitor, then release it. The start-up image does not appear when the LCD monitor is off or the A VOUT terminal is connected to a TV. time a camera control is accessed. You do the direct printing procedure entirely through your camera's LCD monitor. The error message will be displayed on the LCD monitor. See Error Messages on page 129. You can also magnify the real-time image on the LCD monitor by 5x or 10x so you can focus more precisely. Convenient when the camera is mounted on a tripod for shooting still lifes, for example.

About the LCD Monitor The LCD monitor is produced with extremely high-precision manufacturing techniques. More than 99.99 of the pixels operate to specification. Less than 0.01 of the pixels may occasionally misfire or appear as red or black dots. This has no effect on the recorded image and does not constitute a malfunction.
The new interchangeable focusing screens, 2-sec. self-timer, sRAW file format, My Menu, camera setting registration, Live View Function, 3.0-in. LCD monitor with wider color gamut and enhanced information display (ISO always displayed, LCD monitor also used to display settings of shooting functions) all make the EOS 40D easier to use, more flexible and more controllable in an unlimited range of conditions and circumstances. display on the LCD monitor. Although 8C.Fn II -2 High ISO speed noise reduction (p.176) settings (Standard Low Strong Disable) are applied to the recorded images, the images used for image playback (on the LCD monitor or TV screen) and direct printing (except RAW+7L 8L) are not applied with noise reduction (noise may be noticeable in the images).

The XTi features both Basic and Creative Zones on the Mode Dial, a built-in, pop up, flash and a 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensor. Oddly enough, sometimes an update is so minor that it doesn't earn an upgraded number. When Canon introduced firmware version 1.0.4 for an earlier model, it discovered that some of the characters for Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese languages caused problems when displayed on the LCD monitor, and issued a new Version 1.0.4. It recommended installing this fixed firmware for anyone experiencing the problem, even if the user had already upgraded to Version 1.0.4.
In Live View mode, photographers have the choice of straight viewing or overlaying a nine-box Rule of Thirds grid or a 24-box grid to aid in composition. Architectural and landscape photographers have long grown accustomed to these optical features by purchasing special focusing screens for their cameras but now have the option of stepping back from the camera and contemplating the scene as it might appear as a print or Web image and then line up important elements to complement the rectangular frame in Live View. Although the grid disappears from the LCD monitor when shooting video, you can use the grid to compose a scene. This is truly groundbreaking because now you can approach this 35mm dSLR much like a 4 x 5 view camera (only the image is right-side up) and contemplate and compose the whole scene from a distance, the way it used to be. Rule of Thirds placement of critical subjects now becomes intuitive by utilizing the overlay grids.
Live View is an exciting new feature for the 5D Mark II many photographers may already be familiar with from point-and-shoot cameras where a live image appears on the LCD monitor and the viewfinder isn't used to take the picture. The mirror flips up to display the image from the camera sensor on the LCD monitor. Working in Live View allows compositional adjustments similar to shooting with a large format view camera where the image is projected onto the ground glass. It's best utilized when working with a tripod or when you'd rather not use the viewfinder and employ one of the optional grid overlays as compositional aids. It's the only mode you can shoot movies in.
Press this button to turn off the LCD display. If you're using the camera menus, you can press this button to display the current camera settings, available space on the SD SDHC card, and other camera settings. The EOS 30D retains the best of the highly acclaimed basic functions of the EOS 20D an 8.2 MP CMOS sensor, the DiG C II Image Processor, 5 fps fast continuous shooting, a multilayer LPF (low pass filter), high-precision 9-point AF, a durable magnesium alloy body, a multi-controller and vast system compatibility. Some changes are shared with other EOS models, such as the 2.5-inch LCD monitor with a wide viewing angle, Picture Style settings and automatic noise reduction, while other enhancements appear for the first time, including the Print Share button, extended PictBridge functions, enhanced auto-rotate functionality and improvements in Canon-to-Canon device linkage. When you first open your camera and slide the battery into the battery slot, you will be pleased to find that there is probably juice in the battery and you can start shooting right away. What you should really be doing is getting out the battery charger and giving that power-cell a full charge. Not only will this give you more time to shoot, it will start the battery off on the right foot. No matter what claims the manufacturers make about battery life and charging memory, I always find I get better life and performance when I charge my batteries fully and then use them right down to the point where they have nothing left to give. To check your battery level, insert it into the camera, turn on the camera, and look for the battery indicator on the rear LCD. You can also press the shutter release button to wake up the camera. This will activate the rear LCD display and allow you to see the battery level indicator located in the bottom-right portion of the display panel (Figure 1.1).
To use it, simply turn the dial to the A-DEP icon and compose your picture. A-DEP will analyze the data from the focus points and set an aperture adequate to get depth of field over the group along with its corresponding shutter speed. You can see the camera's selection in the information bar along the bottom of the viewfinder or in the LCD display on top of the body.

LCD Panel and LCD Monitor (1) The LCD monitor is manufactured with very high precision technology. However, there may be a few dead pixels where a black or red pixel is always displayed. They number no more than 0.01 percent of all effective pixels. They are not a malfunction and do not affect the images recorded. (2) Do not press hard on an LCD display or subject it to impacts, as this can cause display flaws and damage. (3) If an LCD display becomes soiled, clean it with a commercially available blower brush, or wipe it with a soft cloth, taking care not to scratch the screen. If an LCD display becomes extremely soiled, consult your nearest Canon dealer. (4) By their nature, LCD displays react more slowly at low temperatures, and may appear dark at high temperatures. The display will return to normal at room temperature.
When reviewing your shots on the LCD, don't be fooled by the display. The smaller your image is, the sharper it will look. To ensure that you are getting sharp, blur-free images, make sure that you zoom in on your LCD display. To zoom in on your images, press the Image Review button located to the lower-right of the LCD display and then press the Magnify Image button to zoom (Figure 5.4). Continue pressing the Magnify Image button to increase the zoom ratio.
The new Live View mode can be used in any Shooting mode, including Auto, Creative Auto, Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and Manual.
